The ground is a pale blue-grey, and across it sit hard shards of grey-green and deep dark green, each one a flat angular polygon with sharp corners rather than a soft blob. There is no warm brown anywhere in this reading, which pushes the whole pattern toward a cold, overcast tone: the dark green shards carry the eye while the pale ground holds the contrast gentle.

The pattern behind it is the splinter print, Splittertarnmuster, also written Splittertarn or Splittermuster: a four-colour German design developed in the late 1920s and first issued in 1931. Its signature is a disruptive layout of hard-edged polygons with sharp corners between the coloured patches, plus a random scatter of dashes added in places to break the outline, known as raindrops. It went onto the triangular shelter quarter that buttoned together into a four-man tent, and by the start of the war it was widely distributed through the armed forces.
