Why these shorts

Flecktarn is the pattern most people picture when they think of the modern German military — and for good reason. Adopted by the Bundeswehr in 1990, the five-colour design layers small dots of dark green, olive, light green, brown and black to break up a silhouette in a forest better than almost anything else. On a pair of cargo shorts it turns a simple summer staple into a piece of kit that looks as good in the city as on a trail.

The pattern up close

Look closely and you see the pointillist structure: hundreds of small organic spots in five colours, scattered so densely they almost blend at a distance. The result is a texture that feels alive rather than printed, which is why Flecktarn has been copied by so many armies.
