Pattern: German WWII Platanentarn Summer
A green ground covered with large overlapping leaf forms in a deeper green and dark brown, with lighter green showing through between them. The forms flow across the cloth instead of forming neat geometric blocks.
Platanenmuster, the plane-tree pattern, was a Waffen-SS clothing print rather than a general German Army one. It was designed by Johann Georg Otto Schick, the Munich art professor who headed the German camouflage research unit, and it was field-tested in 1937 by the SS-VT regiment Deutschland; production is usually dated from 1936–37 through to 1944. The design is built from large, irregularly flowing leaf forms — the earlier prints had bigger shapes and fewer spots, the later ones were smaller and more heavily dotted — and reference sources call it the first dotted camouflage pattern. It was printed on reversible cloth, with a summer coloration on one face and an autumn one on the other. MegaCamo catalogues this green reading as Platanentarn Summer.
German WWII Platanentarn Summer on a sports mesh t-shirt
Green with dark brown mottling is the classic SS-cloth look, and on mesh it stays dark and dense enough to read as a genuine heritage pattern while remaining comfortable in warm weather. Good with olive, brown and black.
The shirt itself
This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.
The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
