Pattern: ARVN ERDL 01

A pale sage-khaki ground carries the print, and everything on it is warm. The biggest shapes are blocks of milk-chocolate brown, broad and softly rounded, with olive-green blobs tucked between them and fine near-black brush strokes laid over the top. The four tones hold close together in value, so the surface reads as texture at a distance and only resolves into leaves and branches up close. The balance is brown-led and sun-baked rather than jungle-dark.

The family behind it has a long record. The ERDL pattern, also known as the Leaf pattern, was developed by the United States Army at its Engineer Research & Development Laboratories in 1948, and it did not see service until the Vietnam War, when it reached elite reconnaissance and special operations units from early 1967. A brown-led balance like this one belongs to the highland side of the family, where the light green of the original gave way to light tan. South Vietnam began producing modified versions of the American leaf design late in 1964, and the closer local copy, known as ARVN ERDL, was issued to Airborne Regiments, Vietnamese Rangers and Marine units. The numbers 01 to 06 are a MegaCamo catalogue convention rather than a military designation. MegaCamo labels this one the ARVN ERDL 01.

On a light sports mesh the brown and khaki hold their line well: the print stays legible a metre or two away without shouting, which is what you want from a camo tee in the gym. Because the palette is warm and low in saturation, it sits easily with sand, olive, brown, stone and off-white, and it also works under black shorts or a grey hoodie. The open weave keeps the print from looking flat, and the shirt reads as comfortably at home on a city day as it does in training.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
