Pattern: ARVN ERDL 03

Nothing in this print raises its voice. The ground is an olive-grey, the blocks are khaki-olive, and the strokes are a dark olive-brown that stops well short of black, so the whole surface stays inside a narrow tonal band. Forms overlap so gently that the eye has to work to separate them, and the result is a soft, smoky field that looks almost solid from across a room and only breaks into leaf shapes when you are close. It is the quietest reading of the family.

Low contrast is part of this family’s own story. Collectors have long called the prints whose tones merge at distance the invisible ERDL, describing exactly this effect: brown and olive shapes with black branches on a greenish base that blend into one another as you step back. The family it comes from was developed by the United States Army at its Engineer Research & Development Laboratories in 1948 and issued in Vietnam from early 1967 to elite reconnaissance and special operations units. It finally left US service in the 1980s, when the four-colour woodland uniform of 1981 took over, although ERDL uniforms carried on into the 1990s. MegaCamo labels this one the ARVN ERDL 03.

On light mesh the low contrast keeps the surface calm, and the olive and khaki tones sit naturally with black, charcoal, stone, brown and olive kit. Because nothing in it is loud, it works as a gym shirt, a running layer or an everyday tee, and it layers under a jacket without fighting the rest of the outfit.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
