Pattern: ARVN ERDL 05

This is the same print seen in a high, faded key. A pale mint-sage ground takes most of the surface, light sage and pale khaki shapes drift over it, and the dark strokes are still there but thinned into fine lines rather than solid bars. The contrast is gentle everywhere, so the shirt reads almost like a pale tonal print until you are close enough to pick out the leaf shapes. It is the lightest member of the family, and on mesh it behaves more like a soft pattern than like field camouflage.

The timeline behind the family is a long one. ERDL, also known as Leaf, was designed by the United States Army at its Engineer Research & Development Laboratories in 1948 and produced through to 1981; it was first issued in Vietnam from early 1967 to elite reconnaissance and special operations units, became standard issue with the US Marine Corps in South Vietnam in 1968, and was replaced in US service by the four-colour woodland uniform introduced in 1981. South Vietnam had its own versions from late 1964, worked at first in a lighter cotton sateen, and the closer copy of the American design, ARVN ERDL, was issued to Airborne Regiments, Vietnamese Rangers and Marine units. Pale camouflage is the easiest version to wear in summer and the hardest to make look cheap, and this reading keeps its structure because the dark strokes still trace every shape. On light mesh the mint-sage and khaki sit close to white, denim, stone and pale grey, and the shirt works as a light training layer or as an everyday tee that reads more pattern than military. Best kept away from muddy browns.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
