Pattern: DPM Tropical

This is the brightest end of DPM. A light green ground carries yellow-sand and red-brown blotches, with dark green strokes laid over them, and the contrast between the warm blotches and the green ground is high. The overall effect is warm and tropical rather than shadowy: sunlit yellows and red-browns against fresh green, with the dark strokes holding the whole print together.

The British tropical uniform, officially No.9 Dress and known to collectors as Tropical DPM, was first issued in the 1970s to answer the needs of soldiers in very warm climates such as Belize, Hong Kong and Malaysia. It was cut differently from the standard combat dress, made in a lighter fabric, and printed in a different coloration to the temperate uniform of the day. Early tropical runs were brightly coloured, notably with a russet brown and an emerald green, and the jungle versions run brighter still; on one variation the tan is darker than the green. High-contrast greens and warm blotches give this shirt real summer energy. On an open mesh the light green ground stays bright while the red-brown and dark green forms keep their sharpness, so the print stays legible in strong sunlight. Pair it with khaki, sand, denim or plain black and keep the rest of the outfit quiet: this is the loudest piece in the DPM line.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
