Pattern: DPM Woodland

This is the classic dark woodland reading. An olive-khaki ground carries dark brown, mid-green and near-black-green blotches, and the darker tones are given plenty of room, so the print stays dense and shadowy at any distance. It is a low-light pattern in character: the greens and browns sit close in value, and the near-black forms do the work of breaking up the surface instead of standing out from it.

DPM stands for Disruptive Pattern Material, a term the British Ministry of Defence coined for the camouflage patterns it issued from the late 1960s onward. The woodland version is a four-colour pattern, recorded as black, dark brown, mid-green and a dark sand, carried on the khaki-toned ground the family is known for. It equipped the mediumweight No.8 Temperate Combat Dress from the mid-1960s, was adopted across the Army with the 1968 Pattern and worn during the Falklands campaign, and it stayed in service well into the 2010s before MTP took over. Dark and dense, this is a print that flatters a light mesh: the fabric’s openness stops the woodland palette from closing into one solid mass, so the browns and greens keep their edges. Wear it with olive, khaki, denim and black, and expect it to read as camouflage first and decoration second, which is exactly the point of the pattern.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
