Pattern: UK MTP Arctic

The UK MTP Arctic reading is built on a white ground, and it stays high-key all the way through. Pale grey forms drift across it, cut with light blue-grey ones, so the print reads as a soft, cold haze of greys and off-whites. There is very little deep shadow in it, which keeps the surface bright and open rather than heavy, and the darker forms only separate from the ground when you look at the shirt closely.

The pattern behind it is Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP), the standard camouflage of the British Armed Forces since March 2010 and attributed in design to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. It was drawn up for the mixed terrain British troops met in Afghanistan, and it replaced the four-colour woodland DPM and the separate desert uniform in turn. On record, the British snow kit is plain white over-garments, and the cold-weather and extreme-cold-weather MTP garments are printed in the standard pattern, so this pale version is not an issued snow camouflage. UK MTP Arctic on a sports mesh t-shirt

On a light mesh tee the pale palette comes alive in bright sun, where the greys and off-whites sit close to the fabric’s own tone. It is a cool print, so it wears easily with grey, white, black and washed denim, and it stays quiet enough for the gym or the street. The open weave keeps the shirt dry and stops the lighter greys from flattening into the ground.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
