About the pattern

Flecktarn (“spotted camouflage”) is the modern standard pattern of the German Bundeswehr, developed in the 1970s and adopted in the 1980s. It is built from a dense field of overlapping dots, flecks and small irregular shapes in several colours, designed to blur into a mottled field at a distance. Camopedia documents its development as part of the Bundeswehr Truppenversuch trials and its ongoing use despite the fashion for digital patterns. This render is the classic temperate flecktarn, in its familiar five-colour green-and-brown scheme.

This Flecktarn colourway

The ground is an olive-green, and over it sit a dense scatter of small flecks, dots and irregular shapes in a darker green, a black, a reddish-brown, a tan and a lighter olive. The flecks are small, rounded and closely packed, giving the surface a pointillist, busy texture. The palette is the classic flecktarn green-and-brown — olive, dark green, black, reddish-brown and tan — blended into a rich, mottled field. It is dense and detailed, with no large clear areas.

How it reads on the garment

Because the flecks are dense and the colours are varied, this pattern prints with a busy, richly textured feel. On the body the olive-green ground is covered by the dense scatter of darker and lighter flecks, giving the surface a pointillist, dappled texture. It reads as the unmistakable, classic Bundeswehr flecktarn, detailed and convincing. The olive-green ground sits reasonably against the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline neat.
