Pattern: UK MTP Desert

This is the warm, tan-dominant end of the family. A sand-khaki ground carries brown forms and pale olive-grey ones, and the contrast stays gentle: nothing in the print goes near-black, so the shirt reads dry and sun-bleached instead of dark. The forms themselves keep the soft, irregular edges of the parent pattern, and the light olive-grey works quietly among the browns to stop the print turning flat and sandy.

MTP is the standard British Armed Forces camouflage, in service since March 2010 and designed at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory for the mixed terrain its troops met in Afghanistan. One of its jobs was to replace both the four-colour woodland DPM and the separate British desert uniform with a single pattern, which is why no desert MTP colourway is on issue. The British desert lineage is Desert DPM: first a four-colour brown-and-tan recolouring of the temperate pattern, then a two-colour light brown on sand version from 1990. MTP was built to blend with ground that includes arid stone, so a tan-led version is a natural extension of it. MegaCamo labels this one the UK MTP Desert, our warm, tan-dominant reading of the family.

Warm, dry and low-contrast, this is the sort of print that works as well in town as it does outdoors. Because the palette is gentle it never fights the rest of an outfit, and it settles naturally with sand, khaki, brown, olive and black. On an open mesh the tan reads a little lighter than it does on shelter cloth, which keeps the shirt summery instead of heavy.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
