Pattern: UK MTP Night

The UK MTP Night reading is deliberately dark. A near-black ground carries charcoal forms and dark green ones, and the contrast between them is very low, so at a distance the print reads almost as a single mass and only resolves into separate forms when you look closely. It is the quietest, heaviest member of the family by some way, and it keeps the same soft-edged, irregular structure as the standard pattern.

MTP has been the standard camouflage of the British Armed Forces since March 2010, developed at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory for the mixed terrain of Afghanistan. The closest official link between British camouflage and night work is an older three-colour desert study, considered for enhanced utility in night-time operations; that study was a desert pattern, and it was not the one adopted. No dark or night colourway of MTP is on issue, and the British snow and cold-weather kit is either plain white or printed in standard MTP. A near-black print needs a shirt that can carry it, and an open mesh does. The fabric’s slight translucency keeps the dark palette from going flat, so the charcoal and green forms still separate in daylight. It wears effortlessly with black, charcoal and dark olive, and it keeps a whole outfit low-key at the gym, on the bike or in town.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
