About the pattern

Schneetarn (snow camouflage) is a German winter pattern designed to break up the silhouette against snow. It uses a white or very pale ground scattered with soft grey-green blotches that echo vegetal debris, twigs and shadows on a snowy surface. Camopedia documents that German forces developed and used variations of snow camouflage for winter conditions. This “Dense” render is the fuller version, with more and larger grey-green blotches covering more of the white ground.

The ground is a bright white, and over it sit scattered, soft-edged grey-green blotches and small dark specks. The blotches are irregular and organic, with soft feathery edges, and they are distributed fairly densely across the surface. The palette is minimal — crisp white with grey-green and a little darker grey — giving the pattern a clean, snowy look. Because the blotches are dense, the white ground has fewer large clear areas, making the pattern read as more broken up.

How it reads on the garment

Because the ground is white and the blotches are dense, this pattern prints with a crisp, clean, winter feel. On the body the white ground is broken up by the dense grey-green blotches, giving the surface a soft, speckled texture. It reads as a believable snow camouflage, and it would look striking against a bright white or light base.
