About the pattern

Rauchtarn (“smoke” or “smoke camouflage”) is a German camouflage built from soft, blurred, smoke-like spots with feathery edges rather than sharp shapes. It is a distinctive German pattern, related in spirit to the marsh and other organic patterns. Camopedia documents the variety of wartime German camouflage designs. This “Fall” (autumn) render is the warmer, browner colourway of the Rauchtarn, using blurred brown and tan spots with dark shadows — the autumn-facing version.

The ground is a brown-tan, and over it sit soft, blurred, smoke-like spots in a brown, a tan, a black and a grey-brown. The spots have very soft, feathered edges, blending into one another like drifting smoke or shadow on the ground. The palette is warm and autumn-toned — brown, tan, black and grey-brown — giving the pattern a soft, smoky, earthy look. The blurred edges and the dark shadows give it a mottled, atmospheric texture, with no sharp shapes at all.

How it reads on the garment

Because the shapes are blurred and smoky, this pattern prints with a soft, atmospheric feel. On the body the brown-tan ground sits behind the soft brown, tan and black smoky spots, giving the surface a gentle, mottled, drifting texture. It reads as an autumn smoke pattern, warm and organic.
