Pattern: Australian AUSCAM AFDPU

The AFDPU reading is a multi-tone grey disruptive. A mid-grey ground carries olive-green, brown, tan, dark grey and light grey forms, so the print is busier and more varied than the naval colourway and reads as a full earth-and-grey camouflage rather than a single-tone one. The olive and tan keep a little warmth in it, while the two greys hold the pattern together and stop the earth tones from taking over.

AFDPU stands for Air Force Disruptive Pattern Uniform. It is a variant of the Australian Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform that was tested for the Royal Australian Air Force and never adopted, described as the standard pattern with one of its browns replaced by dark grey. The Australian pattern itself carries the nicknames Auscam, jelly-bean camo and hearts-and-bunnies camo, and it was developed from aerial photographs of Australian terrain to establish which colours and patterns would suit camouflage uniforms best. A grey and earth disruptive is busy enough to be interesting and quiet enough to wear anywhere. On a light mesh tee the mid-grey ground holds the olive, brown and tan forms apart, so the pattern stays readable in daylight instead of collapsing into one tone. Denim, khaki, black and olive all sit comfortably with it, and it is a natural pick if you want an Australian pattern in something other than green.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
