Pattern: Australian AUSCAM DPNU light

The DPNU light reading is very pale. A near-white ground with a faint grey-lavender cast carries blue-grey forms, deeper blue-grey ones and olive-grey accents, so the print stays bright and cool from across a room and only shows its structure close up. It is the lightest member of the Australian family here, and the low contrast between the greys gives it a soft, almost washed look.

DPNU, the Disruptive Pattern Naval Uniform, is the Royal Australian Navy’s colourway of the Australian disruptive pattern, released in 2008. It is built from littoral colours, shades of grey with greens, on a very light grey ground. Notably, it is an identification pattern rather than a concealment one: the Australian pattern is shared across the services so personnel are recognisable as Australian, and the naval colouring marks them as naval. The fabric is flame retardant, and it keeps that property after laundering and exposure to sea water. The Navy has since moved to a later uniform that began entering service in 2021. Very light and cool in tone, this is the most versatile of the naval readings. On an open mesh the near-white ground and the blue-greys stay crisp, so the print reads as a soft grey dapple instead of a heavy camouflage block. It wears well with grey, navy, black and white, and its low contrast makes it an easy choice for training, travel and everyday wear.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
