Soft bands in sand, pale grey-brown, khaki and muted brown, running across the cloth with feathered rather than hard edges. The tones sit close together, so the stripe structure appears gradually as you look at the shirt.

This is the desert reading of tiger stripe, the jungle family that South Vietnamese forces developed and US Special Forces adopted in the early 1960s. Desert versions began to appear shortly before Operation Desert Storm in 1991: the first production run of the Desert Tiger pattern was bought by the US Marine Corps for evaluation and went into service with Marine special operations personnel, and the pattern saw use in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is a commercial rather than an officially issued US pattern, and desert tiger stripe has also been recorded in use with US Special Forces in Afghanistan. Because the contrast is low and the palette is sandy, this is the softest of the tiger stripe shirts: it behaves like a light neutral tee with real pattern interest, and it pairs with every earth tone.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
