Pattern: US MARPAT Urban

The urban reading of the MARPAT pixel field trades the greens for concrete. A grey and silver ground runs through the cloth, carrying black, mid-grey and olive-grey pixels in the same fine rectangular grid. That olive-grey note is what keeps it from reading as a plain grey shirt: it puts a faint warm shadow into the field and stops the greys from going flat. Up close the pixels are crisp and regular, and at arm’s length the whole thing settles into a cool, dry, city-toned surface.

Alongside its woodland and desert colourways, the Marine Corps drew up an urban scheme on the same MARPAT pixel repeat, specified in black, grey, coyote and light grey. That scheme was tested rather than issued, and it was never adopted for general issue, so no standard-issue uniform carries it. The label used here is MegaCamo’s own catalogue name for the grey reading: MegaCamo labels this one the US MARPAT Urban.

Greys and a light mesh are an easy match. The urban pixel field is cool and low in saturation, so it holds its colour on an open weave without any shimmer, and the small black pixels give the surface a bite that a flat grey print never has. It wears well with black, charcoal, navy and white, and it works as happily under a jacket as it does with shorts. Good for gym sessions, city running and commuting, and quiet enough for everyday wear.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
