Pattern: Australian Desert AUSCAM MKI

The MKI desert colourway sits on a pale sand-greige base. The Australian Defence Force needed a desert version of its Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform for operations in dry, open terrain, and the result was a desert rendition of the same five-colour Australian design. It is a genuine national pattern pulled into a clean, wearable desert palette, and a good pick if you want the Australian look without the green.

Why own it: this is the Australian desert disruptives in their first, warm rendition. This is the desert offshoot of the Australian DPCU pattern. The rounded soft-edged shapes are filled in a warm brown, a light grey-tan and a muted olive, so the whole pattern stays pale, dry and low-contrast. The dry palette is a smart shift from the green DPCU, and it works well in summer and in the city.

A light mesh tee gives the palette room to breathe. The green and brown keep their separation instead of flattening into one dark tone, so the print reads as camouflage rather than as a patterned shirt — and black, denim, olive and washed-out neutrals work with it without a fight.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
