Pattern: US Desert Night Ops

Desert Night Ops is the most graphic pattern of the group. A light olive-grey field is crossed by a fine dark grid of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines, with soft, larger patches scattered across it, so the surface looks like a faintly drawn net laid over fabric. The darks are thin rather than blocky, the overall tone is quiet, low in contrast and slightly green, and the pattern reads as texture at a distance and as a precise lattice up close.

This is Desert Night Camouflage, the two-colour grid pattern the US military developed for desert night operations. A fine dark grid and small spots are printed over a light olive ground, a Light Green ground carrying a Dark Green grid-and-rubble print, in a scheme intended to break up a wearer’s shape against Soviet-designed night vision devices. The earliest photographs date to 1972 and field trials came in 1976; two-piece over-garments entered issue in the early 1980s and production stopped in the mid-1990s. It was worn over the six-colour desert uniform, and it has long since been superseded. MegaCamo labels this one the US Desert Night Ops.

The fine lattice is what makes this pattern work on a light fabric. Because the grid lines are thin, a mesh base does not swallow them: the shirt still shows its net-like structure at a distance, even though the contrast is low and the colours are subdued. Olive-grey and dark green sit comfortably with black, olive, khaki and brown. It is a striking, technical-looking shirt for everyday wear, training or the gym, and one of the quietest ways to wear a camouflage that is genuinely unusual.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
