Pattern: US grey tigerstripes

A light grey ground carries striping in white and mid-grey, worked in the same long, stepped horizontal brushstrokes as the wider family but held entirely in greys. The white strokes sit closest to the ground and blur at a distance, while the mid-grey strokes carry the structure. The result is soft, almost pencil-drawn, with none of the hard dark banding the tiger stripe name usually brings to mind.

The grey corner of the tiger stripe story is thin and inconclusive. The one blue-grey tiger reading traced to a United States service is a pattern trialled by the air force in 2002, which the service turned down in favour of a different, pixel-based design; that trial print used dark blue, olive green and slate grey stripes on a blue-grey field. Wartime tiger stripe itself was never an official-issue item of the United States at all, and the family’s classic stripe work has always been built on blacks, browns and greens rather than grey. A grey tiger also exists outside the family, but it is a lizard-type pattern, not a striping design. Grey on grey is the quietest way to wear the family. On a light sports mesh the white and mid-grey strokes sit close in value, so the pattern reads as texture first and stripe second, subtle up close and near-invisible from across a room. That restraint makes it easy to pair with charcoal, black, white, slate or olive, and it suits gym wear, running and city use where a loud camouflage would be too much. What the mesh gives back is lightness: the open weave keeps the pale ground airy instead of washing it out.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
