Pattern: US desert storm chocolate chips

A pale sand ground carrying soft shapes in tan and mid-brown, scattered with small dark flecks and off-white spots — the chips that give the pattern its nickname. The overall effect is a light, broken-up desert surface rather than a bold graphic.

The pattern is the American six-colour desert design, officially the Desert Battle Dress Uniform: two mid-browns over sand and tan, dotted with smaller black and off-white rock shapes. Issue began in 1981 and it saw its heaviest use in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990 and 1991. It was replaced by the three-colour Desert Camouflage Uniform, standardised in 1990 — the Army had moved on by 1992 and the Marine Corps by 1995. Its weaknesses were noted in the Gulf: the design contrasted with the terrain more than intended, and its dark areas held heat, while six colours were also expensive to print.

The chips are small enough to read as texture on a tee, so the shirt stays wearable as a sand-coloured top while still showing a genuine Desert Storm pattern up close. Khaki, sand and brown all sit comfortably with it.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
