An olive-gold ground carrying heavy black stripes, with narrower green and brown strokes threaded between them. The black is what the eye catches first, and the olive ground is warm enough to justify the golden name.

Tiger stripe is the family of jungle patterns developed for South Vietnamese forces and adopted by US Special Forces in late 1962 and early 1963: narrow brush-stroke stripes in green and brown with broader black ones over a lighter olive or khaki, with the strokes interlocking rather than overlapping. It is generally described as descending from the French lizard pattern. Tiger stripe was never an officially issued US item — uniforms were made up by local tailors, which is why so many shade variations exist. Gold tiger is a collector’s name for the sparse advisor-type pattern of around 1968, and it describes a colour reading of the family rather than a separate issue.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
