Pattern: US UCP

A fine pixel field in pale grey, sage green and tan, with no black anywhere in the print. The pixels are small, so from a distance the shirt reads as a soft grey with a green cast.

UCP is the Universal Camouflage Pattern, adopted by the US Army in 2004 for its new Army Combat Uniform, announced in June 2004 and fielded from early 2005. Its three official colours are Desert Sand, Urban Gray and Foliage Green, with black left out deliberately so that the pattern would not stand out under night vision. The design was presented as a derivation of an urban pattern, but pattern comparisons showed it was in fact a three-colour version of the Marines’ MARPAT, and it was adopted without field testing. The universal-camouflage idea did not hold up in practice — the Army announced on 31 July 2014 that the Operational Camouflage Pattern would replace it, and UCP authorisation for the ACU ended on 1 October 2019.

UCP on open mesh gives a light, techy-looking shirt in grey and sage that is easy to wear with denim, grey and olive. The absence of black is what keeps it soft.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
