About the Australian DPCU (AUSCAM) camouflage

DPCU stands for Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform, and it is a five-colour pattern developed for the arid, semi-arid landscapes of the Australian continent. First test-issued around 1983 and standardised in its final production form in 1986, it served the Australian Defence Force until it was replaced by the Multicam-derived AMCU in the 2010s. Its design — a light khaki-tan field scattered with small olive, brown, dark-grey and lighter blotches — is what earned it the “jelly bean” nickname.

The DPCU colorway

This is the classic temperate-issue AUSCAM colourway: an earthy tan base carrying olive-green, brown and grey-blue irregular dots and blobs. The shapes are small and rounded rather than long strokes, which gives the pattern a scattered, almost confetti-like character.

The small rounded shapes pack the fabric tightly, so the print reads as a busy but even texture across the chest, sleeves and hood. The earth-tone contrast keeps it legible, and the all-over repeat flows cleanly over the kangaroo pocket and shoulders without large blank areas.
