Pattern: US duck hunter frogskin winter

A light blue-grey ground is scattered with organic blobs in grey and dark grey, irregular in outline and never repeating, sitting somewhere between a splotch and a spot. The blobs run denser at the centre of the field and thinner at the edges, and the cold blue-grey cast of the ground separates this reading from the warm tan and green versions of the family. It is calm and low in contrast, the darker blobs doing the lifting.

Duck hunter describes a pattern of large, irregular spots or blobs in contrasting colours printed over a solid, usually lighter background. The family goes back to the United States M1942 spot pattern of the Second World War, known as frog skin, issued mainly to personnel serving in the Pacific. The wartime cloth was reversible, with a green-dominant jungle face on one side and a brown-dominant beach face on the other, and production stopped in January 1944; the uniforms were then sold off as military surplus, which is how the nickname duck hunter took hold among hunters.
