Pattern: French Lizard D

The family is the French léopard — known in historical and collecting circles as lizard, and designated TAP 47 for the airborne model — worn by the French Army from 1947 through to the late 1980s and developed from the British airborne Denison smock. The French lizard is one of the great historical camouflage families, and the D is its classic representative: warm tan, rich red, soft green, all in a flowing brushstroke. This D is one of several French Lizard sheets in the catalogue, joining the A2, B1, C1, tropical, E1 and F1 variants.

The tan base keeps it light, while the maroon and sage give it the characteristic lizard depth. If you want a single sheet that says “this is what lizard camo is,” this is it. This is the lizard pattern the way most collectors picture it. Crucially, the pattern was printed in many dye lots over about a decade and issued concurrently, so the family is naturally a group of variants rather than one immutable design.

It is also easy to wear — the warm palette is far more versatile than a high-contrast woodland, and it gives any outfit an unmistakably vintage military character.
