The type that collectors know as TAP47 appeared around 1947, and from the 1950s it was the standard pattern for French paratroopers, including during the Algerian campaigns. This is the classic, slightly faded Lizard look: a pale olive-khaki ground covered with loose, roughly horizontal patches of deeper olive, brown and a touch of reddish rust.

The French Lizard pattern developed from the British brushstroke camouflage used on the Denison smock, and it eventually became the signature camouflage of the French airborne for decades. It is the classic French take on the lizard or leopard pattern, built from flowing, irregular shapes that call to mind a leopard’s rosettes smudged onto an olive base. If you like your camouflage with a little history, the French Lizard is a good place to start. Lizard camo has a low-key, vintage appeal that works brilliantly on a warm, comfortable layer.

This is a pattern that gains from a light ground, and the mesh supplies it: the olive, brown and rust stay distinct rather than muddy, so the camouflage is unmistakable up close while settling into an even surface at distance. Denim, black, olive and plain neutrals all work with it.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
