Pattern: French Lizard A1
If you like your camouflage with a little history, the French Lizard is a good place to start. It is the classic French take on the lizard or leopard pattern, built from flowing, irregular shapes that call to mind a leopard’s rosettes smudged onto an olive base. On a fleece-lined hoodie it is warm, soft and quietly striking – the kind of pattern you can wear every day without shouting, yet unmistakable to anyone who knows camouflage.
About the French Lizard camouflage
The French Lizard pattern grew out of the same family as the British Denison smock, and it eventually became the signature camouflage of the French airborne for decades. The type that collectors know as TAP47 appeared around 1947, and from the 1950s it was the standard pattern for French paratroopers, including during the Algerian campaigns. It is built from soft, elongated shapes in olive green, rust brown and sand or khaki over a lighter ground. Notice that “A1” is not an official French military designation – it is MegaCamo’s own catalogue label for this particular rendition of the Lizard.
The A1 colorway and how it reads
This is the classic, slightly faded Lizard look: a pale olive-khaki ground covered with loose, roughly horizontal patches of deeper olive, brown and a touch of reddish rust. Because the shapes are soft and irregular rather than hard-edged, the whole hoodie feels organic – more like something that grew that way than something printed. It suits the fleece-lined interior perfectly, because the pattern flows with the fabric instead of fighting it.
Why own this fleece-lined hoodie?
Lizard camo has a low-key, vintage appeal that works brilliantly on a warm, comfortable layer. The soft, irregular shapes do not demand attention the way a bold tiger stripe or a bright digital pixel does, so it is easy to wear with almost anything – jeans, chinos, a plain jacket. On the smooth printed surface of this fleece-lined hoodie the colours hold their warmth, and the pattern stays readable rather than turning into a smudgy blur. It is an understated way to wear a genuine piece of camouflage history.
Comfort, fit and build
This fleece-lined hoodie is built for everyday wear. It is 100% polyester with a soft brushed fleece interior, an adjustable drawstring hood, long sleeves with ribbed cuffs and a roomy kangaroo pocket. The fit is relaxed, so it layers easily over a T-shirt and still looks tidy under a heavier coat.
