Pattern: French Lizard E1

A strong olive-green ground covered in slanted brushstrokes of rust brown, warm tan and a deeper green. Of the lizard colourways it is the greenest: the rust and the tan stay as accents inside a clearly green field.

This is the lizard family — camouflage léopard in French — the brushstroke camouflage developed from the British Denison smock, worn by the French Army from 1947 until the late 1980s and known to collectors as TAP 47. Lizard prints work by overlapping two or three printed colours so that gaps in the strokes reveal a dyed base, which is why the family comes in so many dye-lot variations. The Tenue Léopard was officially withdrawn in January 1963 in the aftermath of the Algerian War, while the all-arms versions continued into the early 1980s. E1 belongs to the collector classification of lizard prints — a colourway code, not an official French Army pattern name.

The E1 reading is the boldest of the lizard colourways on cloth: green enough to sit with olive and khaki, warm enough to wear with brown or sand. On open mesh the rust strokes stay crisp instead of muddying.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
