About the pattern

The lizard is a brushstroke camouflage derived from the French tenue de leopard, built from broad, horizontal brush strokes in several colours on a pale base. It spread widely around the world. This Afghan-associated “Dark Lizard” render is a dark, muted version of the lizard, with grey-brown and olive strokes on a deeper ground — the more sombre colourway of the lizard family, quite unlike the pale warm Afghan Lizard.

The ground is a muted grey-brown, and over it sit broad, horizontal brushstroke shapes in an olive-green, a grey, a brown and a darker grey-brown, with feathered, brush-drawn edges. The strokes are roughly horizontal and organic, overlapping softly. The palette is muted and sombre — grey-brown, olive-green, grey and dark grey-brown — giving the pattern a dark, subdued look. The feathered edges give it the characteristic lizard texture, soft and brush-drawn rather than sharp.

How it reads on the garment

Because the strokes are broad and the palette is muted, this pattern prints with a soft, subdued feel. On the body the grey-brown ground sits behind the olive-green, grey and brown brushstrokes, giving the surface a feathered, organic texture. It reads as a dark, muted lizard, sombre and easy to wear.
