Pattern: US duck hunter frogskin summer

The original fabric was reversible – one green, spring/summer side and one brown, autumn side – and both were built from small, soft, leaf- and pebble-like blotches rather than stripes or pixels. It is the sunniest of the duck-hunter colourways, and the one that reads most clearly as green from a distance. Duck Hunter, also known as frog skin, has roots in 1942, when cloth was commissioned for US Marine Raiders.

Its best-known form, the M1942 reversible “frog skin”, was worn by US Marines in the Pacific. A pale sage-cream field is broken up by mid-green leaf shapes and paler lime highlights, with only a few soft brown-grey pebbles for balance. The honest reason is that this is a real, traceable piece of camouflage history printed on a surface that shows it off. The green shapes stay distinct even in large print, and the smooth printed face keeps the edges crisp.

A light mesh tee gives the palette room to breathe. The green and brown keep their separation instead of flattening into one dark tone, so the print reads as camouflage rather than as a patterned shirt — and black, denim, olive and washed-out neutrals work with it without a fight.

The shirt itself

This is the T45 sports mesh t-shirt: 100% polyester mesh cloth at 7.05 oz, with a relaxed fit and a soft hand that keeps it comfortable from the first wear. It weighs about 0.19 kg, so it stays light on the shoulders even in the larger sizes.

The mesh is open enough to move air and dry quickly, and the double-needle hemmed sleeves and bottom hold their shape instead of fraying. The print sits in the fabric and is made not to fade, so the camouflage stays as sharp as the day it was made.
