About the pattern

Xingkong (星空) translates as “starry sky,” and it is the camouflage the Chinese People’s Liberation Army adopted in 2019 across all service branches. It took over from the Type 07 digital family and, unlike its predecessor, put every branch on the same set of designs rather than giving each its own palette — a genuine break from the older system.

The construction is the interesting part. Instead of the hard pixel squares of Type 07, Xingkong layers a fine scatter of tiny digital granules (“stars”) beneath soft, cloud-like bands. Those softer bands blur the outline as viewing distance changes, which is the source of its better multi-range concealment. It was first shown in September 2019 at the 70th anniversary of the PRC and is issued with the Type 19 and Type 21 uniform series. This is a documented current national-issue pattern, not a fabricated print.

This Urban colorway

This is the cool, monochrome Xingkong rendition. The base is a pale silver-grey, and the cloud masses run from light grey into mid-grey, anthracite and charcoal, with no green or tan at all. The whole thing is deliberately neutral and low-contrast. “Urban” is a MegaCamo colourway label; the issued family came in five standard schemes (urban, woodland, jungle, desert and tundra), and this is the grey one.

How it reads on the garment

On a long-sleeve hooded tee, the grey field reads like a subtle, almost monochrome print — closer to a stone or concrete texture than a classic camo. The fine star granules give the grey a matte, speckled life that a plain grey tee lacks, and the light hood lining melts into the pale base leaving a clean neckline. From a short distance the soft grey masses break the torso into shapes without any loud colour, which makes it ideal for city wear or for pairing with black, navy and neutral streetwear.

Why own it

This is the Xingkong for people who want a camo pattern they can wear almost anywhere without it reading “military” from across the room. It is current, it is a genuine PLA design, and it is easy to mix with a largely grey, black or denim wardrobe. For collectors it is a clean example of the tiny-star construction that separates Xingkong from the pixel-block generation, and it contrasts nicely with the warm Desert and green Jungle siblings. If you prefer understated, this is the one.

Fit, fabric and care

This is a lightweight long-sleeve hooded t-shirt made for everyday layering. It is cut from a stretch 94% polyester / 6% spandex blend that moves with you and holds its shape, with a comfortable regular fit and sizes from S to 3XL. It weighs about 0.374 kg, so it packs small and layers easily under a jacket or a fleece in cooler weather.

Disclosure

This is a reproduction / military-inspired item, not issued Chinese uniform kit. The 2019 adoption and Type 19 / Type 21 fielding are documented pattern history, but the garment itself is a modern printed reproduction for everyday wear. The grey “Urban” colouring is a MegaCamo interpretation of the design; the official Xingkong family was issued in five standard schemes.
