Pattern: Czech jehlicí Rainstripe — vz.60 Needles (green)

The Czechoslovak vz.60, known as jehlicí — the Czech word for needles — is the Czechoslovak take on the East German Strichtarn rainstripe. Where the German original used a single, plainer ground, the Czechoslovak version sets itself apart with a two-tone background, and that subtle difference is what gives the pattern its own character. It is a dense, all-over design built from thousands of short, fine vertical dashes, so at a distance the whole surface reads as a streaked, drawn texture rather than as distinct blotches. It is one of the most recognisable mid-century Eastern Bloc patterns.

This is the green rendition. The ground is a muted olive green, and the fine needle dashes over it are a slightly darker, deeper green. Because both tones are green, the pattern is quiet and low-contrast — it never shouts, it just breaks up the surface with a steady vertical rhythm. In a forest setting that streaked surface is surprisingly good at dissolving a silhouette, which is why the rainstripe was carried for so long.

On a lightweight hooded tee the jehlicí pattern gives an unusual, almost textile-like look. Rather than the bold blobs of a typical camo, you get a fine, repeated vertical grain that runs across the chest, arms and hood as part of the all-over print. It reads more like a knitted or woven camo than a printed blotch pattern, which makes it a subtly different and distinctive piece.

Why own this version: the vz.60 needles is a genuine piece of Eastern Bloc military design with a clear lineage from the German rainstripe, and the green is its classic field colour. The dense streaked texture is distinctive and understated, and it gives the wearer something a little more refined than the usual camouflage blobs. The garment. This is a lightweight long-sleeve hooded T-shirt, printed all over with the pattern you can see on the image. It is cut with long sleeves and a hood and fits as a regular, athletic top. The fabric is a 94% polyester / 6% spandex blend, so it stretches with you, sits smooth against the skin and takes the all-over print cleanly. It is a light piece — about 0.374 kg — and runs in sizes S to 3XL.

Fit and size. Because the sizes run S–3XL, pick the one closest to your usual top; the stretch in the spandex gives a little forgiveness, but for a closer cut take a size down and for a looser, layer-over fit take a size up. The print covers the whole garment, so the pattern continues across the chest, arms and hood without a gap.

Made to Order. Each shirt is printed and sewn after you place your order. Production and fulfilment take roughly 4 to 7 days before the item ships — that is the time to make and pack it, not the total delivery time, which then depends on transport once it leaves us. It is not sitting on a shelf, and that is what allows a historic Eastern Bloc pattern like this to be offered at all.

Care. To protect the print, machine wash at or below 45°C, skip the bleach and avoid prolonged soaking. Launder on a normal cycle with like colours and don’t tumble dry hot. Gentle washing keeps the fine green needles from muddying together.
