About the pattern

Introduced in 1964, the Loreng Darah Mangalir (“flowing blood”) pattern was originally intended to be a copy of the World War Two-era British Denison brushstroke camouflage, for issue to the RPKAD (Indonesian Army Special Forces). But Camopedia records that an error at the original manufacturing plant resulted in the vertical, vine-like stripes that characterise this unique pattern. Rather than the horizontal brushstrokes of the Denison, the design ran vertically, giving it a flowing, organic look quite unlike its British inspiration. It is one of the most distinctive Indonesian camos.

The ground is a pale cream, and over it run soft, vertical vine-like stripes in a green, a red and a purple or mauve. The stripes are organic and variable in width, flowing down the garment like hanging vines or blood streaks, with the pale ground showing through between them. There are no sharp edges or pixels — everything is soft and brush-drawn. The combination of green, red and purple against the pale cream gives it an unusual, almost vivid look, quite unlike a typical woodland.

Because the stripes run vertically and the palette is unusual, this pattern prints with a striking, flowing rhythm on the body. The vertical vine-like stripes give the garment a sense of motion and a distinctly organic character, and the green, red and purple reads as bold and unusual.
