A rarely seen Republic of Korea Marine Corps design that collectors know by three names.

About the pattern

The leopard-jigsaw is one of those mid-century camouflage experiments that looks like two different things at once, which is exactly why it stuck with collectors. Properly it belongs to the Republic of Korea Marine Corps: in the mid-1970s the ROKMC retired their older duck-hunter spot pattern and fielded a design that troops and reference sources alike nicknamed “leopard,” “jigsaw” or “puzzle”. Its signature move is the way the shapes lock together — irregular, linked, jigsaw-piece blobs that read as both animal spots and fractured stone. The design first appeared at the 1975 Armed Forces Parade, and by about 1977 it had been replaced with a different camouflage, which is why this is a genuinely short-lived, hard-to-find pattern rather than a long-running standard.

Reference material (Camopedia, ROK entry) also notes limited use with ROK Navy SEAL units, which is where the “Navy SEAL” part of the naming comes from. It is a real-historical thread, not a made-up marketing badge, but it was never the sole or dominant ROK issue — treat it as an interesting footnote to a quickly-replaced marine pattern.

This v1 colorway

The v1 render stays firmly in the cool woodland register. The base is a pale grey-moss green; laid over it are linked organic forms in a deeper sage-olive and a softer brown-tan, with a muted grey-brown outline that gives the whole print a slightly dusty, desaturated character. The greens come forward here, and there is no stark black or harsh contrast — the palette sits close, tonal and quiet. That makes v1 the “classic green” reading of the pattern and the one most collectors picture when they hear “leopard jigsaw.”

How it reads on the garment

Printed over a long-sleeve hooded tee, the design wraps the torso in one continuous, medium-scale field of locked-together shapes. There are no hard digital pixels and no fine parallel stripes, so from a distance the shirt reads as smooth mottled green, and up close the individual puzzle pieces become readable and satisfying to trace. The plain light-grey hood lining and collar frame the print nicely and keep the neckline clean.

Why own it

Two reasons. First, it is a genuine rarity: an officially worn ROK Marine pattern that was only around for a couple of years around the mid-1970s, so far more people have heard of Flecktarn or M05 than this. Second, that Navy SEAL footnote gives it a small dose of provenance that a generic woodland simply cannot match, without turning it into an over-claimed “elite” pattern. On a modern garment it is a slice of 1970s ROK military history you can actually wear — and few will be able to name it.
