About the pattern

The US M81 woodland is one of the most widely copied camouflage patterns in the world, and Iran is no exception — Camopedia records several Iranian copies of the M81 woodland and its variants in use since the 1980s. The Iranian Air Force took this a step further with a distinctive colour variation: instead of the usual greens and browns, its woodland runs black, blue and grey shapes on a pale blue or grey background. This render is that Air Force version — the familiar M81 woodland structure and irregular blotches, but in a cool blue register. It is one of the more unusual takes on a classic pattern.

This Air Force M81 colourway

The base is a very pale blue-grey, close to a light grey or pale ice tone. Over it sit the classic M81 woodland shapes — irregular, organic blotches with characteristic rounded edges and the small branching breaks — in a mid steel-blue, a deeper navy-blue and near-black. There is no green, brown or tan; the whole palette stays cool and blue. The shapes are the familiar M81 proportions but the colours are unmistakably naval or urban rather than woodland. It is a striking, clean print.

How it reads on the garment

Because the base is pale and the palette is cool, this pattern prints with a clean, bright feel rather than a heavy one. On the body the pale blue-grey ground dominates, with the blue and black blotches breaking it up in the recognisable M81 rhythm. It reads as a modern blue urban or naval print rather than a traditional woodland, and it stands out against the sea of green-and-brown camos. The pale ground blends cleanly into the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline tidy.
