About the pattern

Camopedia records that a second type Strichmuster (line pattern) or Strichtarn (line camouflage) design was introduced in 1968, differing from the original in having thicker brown rain streaks on a greyish-green background. It was in production until the collapse of the DDR in 1990 and was used across numerous types of uniform, shelter half, helmet cover, field cap, field equipment and other specialised clothing. This render is that second type, with its bolder, thicker rain streaks. It is the more pronounced of the two Strichtarn versions.

This Strichtarn Type 2 colourway

The ground is a greyish-green, slightly deeper than the pale Field Type 1, and over it run long brown rain streaks in a roughly vertical, evenly spaced arrangement. The streaks here are thicker and bolder than in the first type, giving the surface a stronger, more linear texture. The palette is simple — a grey-green field with thicker brown lines. Because the streaks are bolder and the field is a touch deeper, this version reads with a little more contrast than Type 1, though it remains a very simple, spartan design.

How it reads on the garment

Because the streaks are thicker, this pattern prints with a bolder linear feel than the pale Type 1. On the body the grey-green ground is broken by the thicker, evenly spaced brown streaks, giving the surface a striped, textured rhythm with a little more presence. It is still subtle and understated, quite unlike a bold woodland, but it reads more clearly than the first type. The grey-green field blends reasonably into the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline tidy.

If you like simple, minimalist camouflage, the Strichtarn Type 2 is a strong and historically interesting pick — it is the later, bolder version of one of the most recognisable East German designs, documented as in production until the end of the DDR in 1990. It carries the documented NVA and Warsaw Pact lineage, so it appeals to collectors of East German and Warsaw Pact camouflage.
