About the pattern

Camopedia records that the first type Strichmuster (line pattern) or Strichtarn (line camouflage) was a very simple pattern incorporating long, slender brown rain streaks on a light greyish-green background. It was produced between 1965 and 1968 for use on the East German Kampfanzug 64 combat uniform, and remained in use for several years after. The “rain” theme was common across many Warsaw Pact nations and was probably influenced by World War Two German designs such as Splittermuster and Sumpftarn. This render is that first type, with its thin brown rain streaks.

The ground is a pale greyish-green, light and slightly muted, and over it run long, slender brown rain streaks in a roughly vertical, evenly spaced arrangement. The streaks are thin and broken, giving the surface a fine, liner texture rather than large shapes. The palette is simple — a pale grey-green field with thin brown lines. Because the streaks are fine and the field is pale, the pattern reads as low-contrast and subtle. It is one of the simplest and most spartan of all camouflage designs.

How it reads on the garment

Because the pattern is just thin brown streaks on a pale field, this prints with a very clean, linear feel. On the body the pale grey-green ground is broken by the fine, evenly spaced brown streaks, giving the surface a striped, textured rhythm. It is subtle and understated, quite unlike a bold woodland. The pale grey-green field blends cleanly into the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline tidy.
