Pattern: Australian AMCU — multiscale combat pattern

AMCU is the modern combat pattern of the Australian Defence Force, general-issued from 2014 onwards. It replaced the long-serving DPCU (Auscam). AMCU is a broad multiscale design — it carries several layers of organic shapes at different scales so that it works from close up to distance, and it was shaped by the same design school that produced the widely-used multiscale US pattern.

The AMCU colourway is a warm, terrestrial mix. The base is a tan-khaki, and over it sit interlocking patches of olive-green, brown, dark grey-green and a soft off-white. The shapes are smooth and flowing, at mixed sizes, which is what gives the whole pattern its natural, dappled look.

On a hooded long-sleeve top the multiscale mix melts together nicely, so the shirt reads as a soft, natural camo rather than a flat print. It is a modern, versatile military pattern that works as everyday wear as well as outdoor kit.

Why own it: AMCU is the current Australian combat pattern, a genuine national design that replaced the well-known Auscam. Its multiscale construction and warm palette make it both historically current and very wearable, and it is an interesting alternative to the green woodlands that fill the market.

The garment. This is a lightweight long-sleeve hooded T-shirt, printed all over with the pattern you see on the image. It is cut with long sleeves and a hood and fits as a regular, athletic top. The fabric is a 94% polyester / 6% spandex blend, so it stretches with you, feels smooth against the skin and takes the all-over print cleanly. It is a lightweight piece — about 0.374 kg — and runs in sizes S to 3XL.

Fit and size. Because the sizes run S–3XL, pick the one closest to your usual top size; the stretch in the spandex gives a little forgiveness, but for a closer cut take a size down and for a looser, layer-over fit take a size up. The print is applied across the whole garment, so the pattern continues over the chest, arms and hood without a break.

Made to Order. Each shirt is printed and sewn after you place your order. Production and fulfilment take roughly 4 to 7 days before the item ships — that is the time to make and pack it, not the total delivery time, which then depends on transport once it leaves us. It is not sitting on a shelf, and that is what lets us offer patterns that would never be worth stocking.

Care. To protect the print, machine wash at or below 45°C, do not use bleach and avoid prolonged soaking. Launder on a normal cycle with like colours and don’t tumble dry hot. Cold, gentle washing is the best way to keep the colours bright.
