About the pattern

The M58 Flächentarnmuster (“area pattern”), also called Kartoffelmuster (potato) or Blumentarn (flower), was issued to East German NVA and Ministry of Interior units between 1956 and 1967. Camopedia notes the dyes were not thoroughly consistent, producing several minor colour variations over time. This v3 render is a cooler, bluer take on that M58 design — the same ragged blotch structure, but with a light grey-blue ground and more prominent blue-green and teal blotches, giving it a cooler character than the field-grey v1 and the warm v2.

This M58 v3 colourway

The ground is a light grey-blue, and over it sit ragged, irregular blotches in a blue-green or teal, an olive-green, a brown and a slightly darker grey. The blotches are loosely shaped and organic, with ragged torn edges. Compared to v1 and v2, the ground here is cooler and bluer, and the blue-green and teal blotches are more prominent, giving the pattern a distinctly cool cast. The olive and brown are still present but the overall feel is cooler and bluer. It is soft and slightly faded.

How it reads on the garment

Because the ground is cooler and the teal and blue-green are prominent, this pattern prints with a cool, soft feel. On the body the grey-blue ground sits behind the teal, olive and brown blotches, giving the surface a ragged, mottled texture with a distinctly cool-blue character. It reads as a cool-toned East German camo, with the blue-green lending it a subtle, distinctive character. The pale grey-blue ground blends cleanly into the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline tidy.
