About the pattern

The M58 Flächentarnmuster (“area pattern”), also called Kartoffelmuster (potato) or Blumentarn (flower), was issued to East German NVA and Ministry of Interior units between 1956 and 1967. Camopedia notes that the dyes used to print the pattern were not thoroughly consistent, producing several minor colour variations over time. This v4 render is one of those warmer variations — the same ragged blotch structure as the other M58 renders, but with a distinctly warm tan ground and olive-green blotches.

The ground is a warm tan, and over it sit ragged, irregular blotches in an olive-green, a green and a slightly darker tan, with a few muted teal accents. The blotches are loosely shaped and organic, with ragged torn edges, overlapping unevenly. Compared to the greyer v1 and v5, and the cooler blue v3, this v4 is the warmest of the family — the tan ground and the olive-green blotches dominate, and the overall cast is warm and earthy. It has a soft, slightly faded look.

How it reads on the garment

Because the ground is a warm tan and the blotches are olive-green, this pattern prints with a warm, natural feel. On the body the tan ground sits behind the olive and green blotches, giving the surface a ragged, mottled texture. It reads as a warm-toned East German camo, close in feel to a woodland but with the distinctive ragged blotch structure and subtle teal accents of the M58. The warm ground sits well against the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline tidy.
