About the pattern

The M58 Flächentarnmuster (“area pattern”), also called Kartoffelmuster (potato) or Blumentarn (flower), was issued to East German NVA and Ministry of Interior units between 1956 and 1967. Camopedia notes that the dyes were not thoroughly consistent, producing several minor colour variations over time. This v2 render is a warmer, greener take on that M58 design — the same ragged blotch structure, but with a warmer tan ground and more olive-green and tan blotches, giving it a different character from the cooler field-grey v1.

This M58 v2 colourway

The ground is a warm tan with a slightly pinkish-grey cast, and over it sit ragged, irregular blotches in an olive-green, a teal or blue-green, a brown and a pale grey. The blotches are loosely shaped and organic, with ragged torn edges. Compared to v1, the ground is warmer and more tan, the olive-green is more prominent, and the overall cast is a bit warmer and greener. The teal accents are still present but the balance tips toward the warm olive and tan. It has a softer, slightly faded look.

How it reads on the garment

Because the ground is warmer and the olive-green is more prominent, this pattern prints with a warmer, greener feel than the cooler v1. On the body the warm tan ground sits behind the olive, teal and brown blotches, giving the surface a ragged, mottled texture. It reads as a warm, natural East German camo, with the teal accents lending it a distinctive subtle character. The warm ground sits well against the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline tidy.
