About the pattern

The M58 Flächentarnmuster (“area pattern”), also called Kartoffelmuster (potato) or Blumentarn (flower), was issued to East German NVA and Ministry of Interior units between 1956 and 1967. Camopedia notes that the dyes used were not thoroughly consistent, producing several minor colour variations — some of which may appear darker due to anti-gas chemical coating. This v5 render is a cool, silvery variation of that M58 design, with the same ragged blotch structure but a pale, cool grey-tan ground and prominent teal blotches.

The ground is a pale, silvery grey-tan, and over it sit ragged, irregular blotches in a teal or blue-green, an olive-green and a slightly darker grey-green. The blotches are loosely shaped and organic, with ragged torn edges, overlapping unevenly. Compared to the warm v2 and v4, and the bluer v3, this v5 is cool but pale — the silvery grey-tan ground gives it a light, airy cast, and the teal blotches are prominent. It is soft and slightly faded, with a distinctly cool, silvery character.

How it reads on the garment

Because the ground is pale and silvery and the blotches are teal and olive, this pattern prints with a cool, light feel. On the body the silvery grey-tan ground sits behind the teal and olive blotches, giving the surface a ragged, mottled texture. It reads as a cool, pale East German camo, with the teal lending it a subtle, distinctive character and the silvery ground keeping it light and easy to wear. The pale ground blends cleanly into the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline tidy.
