About the pattern

Splittertarn (splinter pattern) is a German camouflage family defined by angular, splintered shapes overlaid with fine “rain streaks”. It descended from the First World War era and was refined as the wartime Splittertarn 31. Camopedia notes the design was given new life for the West German Bundeswehr in 1956, and distinguishes the later versions from the wartime original. This render is a desert colourway of the splinter pattern — a lighter, sandier version made for arid environments. It keeps the angular splinter shapes and rain streaks but in a pale palette.

This Splittertarn Desert colourway

The ground is a pale sand-tan, and over it sit angular, splintered shapes in a sage-green, a muted brown and a pale grey, all overlaid with thin rain streaks. The splinters are sharp and fragmented, with straight edges and angular corners, quite unlike the soft blobs of a woodland. The palette is light and muted — sand, sage, grey and pale brown — so the pattern reads as pale and subdued. The rain streaks cut thinly across the surface, adding a wet, streaky texture.

Because the palette is pale and the shapes are angular, this pattern prints with a light, broken feel rather than a heavy one. On the body the sand ground sits behind the sage and grey splinters, giving the surface a fragmented, streaky texture. It reads as a desert splinter camo — light, muted and distinctive — with the rain streaks adding a fine, organic detail. The pale ground blends cleanly into the light hood lining and collar, keeping the neckline tidy.
