About the pattern

Greek camouflage was strongly shaped by the French tenue leopard and the Portuguese M1963 “vertical lizard” designs, and one of the most distinctive results is the vertical pattern recorded by Camopedia as having been worn by the 32nd Marines Regiment, today the 32nd Marines Brigade. It consists of dense vertical stripes of blue-black and two shades of olive green on a tan background, and a few collectors nicknamed it “Greek seaweed” because of the way it resembles hanging strands of aquatic plant life. The base is a warm tan, and over it run dense, roughly vertical brushstroke stripes in a blue-black and two shades of olive green. The strokes are not clean lines — they have irregular, brush-drawn edges and breaks, giving them a ragged, painted character. The blue-black provides a cool contrast against the warm tan and the olive greens, and the vertical flow of the strokes gives the pattern a clear directional feel. There is stippling in places, adding texture to the print.

How it reads on the garment

Because the strokes run vertically and densely, this pattern gives a strong directional rhythm on the body. The brush-drawn edges and the mix of blue-black, green and tan create an organic, almost dappled look that recalls brush or seaweed rather than a rigid graphic.
